No, Jasper and Maria were not an item; they were merely friends/colleuges. Jasper became depressed because he didn’t like his blood thirsty lifestyle and whenever he killed; they felt his preys emotions as he died.
He had nowhere to go and didn’t know what he was going to do. They weren’t bf and gf but they were excellent friends and Jasper knew that Maria was going to turn on him, that is why he was sad.
