Three Movies to Avoid this Holiday Season

There are lots of new movies coming out in time for the holiday season. If you are looking for some huge, dumb fun, I would suggest “2012.” If you want some political satire and humor, “The Men Who Stare At Goats.” If you want to be really depressed, see “The Road” or “Precious.” Any of those films are more deserving of your money than the three below which should be avoided like the plague.

1) Blind Side

Sandra Bullock plays real-life Leigh Anne Tuohy, an altruistic upper-class white lady, who probably has a BMW Turbo in her garage, who rescues a homeless black youth and invites him to live with her family. Teenager Michael Oher who is now a right tackle for the Baltimore Ravens is raised by Tuohy and her husband as their son. Maybe this sort of do-gooder, uplifting schlock is for your cup of tea, but you could not pay me to sit through this pandering, cliché tale of a white charity. The huge joke making the rounds is that Bullock will be up for an Oscar Nomination for her role in the film. And I thought giving the Best Picture to “Crash” was terrible enough.

2) Ancient Dogs

Why Vampire Movies are Cool

So what makes vampires such a cool topic for movies?   There are a lot of them.  Action movies.   Horror.  Romance.   Teen Romance.  Blood-suckers are everywhere the silver screen crackles.

If you take into account the cultural basis for the “tall, dark, and mysterious weirder in the night,” the chilling image of a blood-sucking immortal with powers beyond humankind is pretty romantic.  And sexy.  Vampires in some areas of the world commanded dread and respect as evil monsters that hunt in the night.  But there has also always been a slightly morbid fascination with this creature.  An allure that draws us in and fascinates us.

Much of the vampire mythos has to do with the ability to have and take anything you want… including people.  This is a primal sexual instinct in us primates and to glorify such a power and right is a bit of our own egotistic dreaming coming out in our literature and films.

But let’s face it, among all the super-hero type mythical creatures, the vampire has always remained sexy.  They don’t hulk out into beast form (though some have that demonic bat-form thing) and they don’t shake a magic wand around.  They just kill.  And drink blood.  And look damn excellent doing it!

10 Best Vampire Movies of All Time

Vampire movies are a classic staple of Hollywood culture, not just in the horror genre.  Vampire movies trend into romance, sex, and drama just as often as they bare fangs in the dark to scare us.   There are several reasons for this but the reality is that vampire movies are a cultural trend that doesn’t look to be drying up any time soon.

So, which ones are worth your time?

The Myth of Vampire Movies

Lets talk vampire movies.  Not quite horror and not quite drama. Some weird mix of the two.  And people can’t get enough of vampires!  They’re on every list, on all sort of merchandise, they’re everywhere you turn!  It’s out of control!

Vampire movies are always well loved because they’re always certain.  You know what you’re going to get before you even pick stand in line to buy tickets.  A hot lust connection with one of the couple is guaranteed to be a vampire.  The vampire tries to protect the more “delicate” of the pair from certain doom, despite the non-vampires’ insistence that they are NOT that fragile.  Throw in lots of death metal, black leather and very, VERY hot scenes of vampire lust.  The actors are always hot and the more they try to resist each other the hotter the other gets until all the audience members are panting.  Does the vamp bite in this movie?  Depends on if they get hurt.  Edward NEVER bites Bella but Selene certainly sinks her teeth into Michael.  Yea, yea, life or death…but Edward so doesn’t want Bella to be a vampire!

Of course Twilight isn’t your usual vampire movie.  Twilight is reinventing the image of vampires everywhere.  Gone are the dark denizens of the night with their fangs and dread of burning in the sun.  Not for the Cullens!  The Cullens bring us emo vegetarians who glitter in the sun and the best way to gauge the depth of your danger is by the color of their eyes.  Edward is THE tortured artist.  Notice all his journals?  All the music?  And Bella’s lullaby?  Seriously?  Really thought THAT drama finished in the 8th grade!  But it’s still a date movie.  You’re still going to get lots of lust, lots of pretty people and a vampire who knows he should stay away from the human but can’t.

Vampire movies have an simple formula.  If you follow the formula above, you get Twilight, Underworld, The Vampire Diaries, Right Blood…..it’s the formula of the day!
