I have loved all the Hathaways. Tempted at Midnight was also a five star to me, and four stars for Seduce Me At Sunrise.
The ruthless Harry Rutledge turns out to be one of the best heros this year. He started to like Poppy the moment he spoke with her and saw not only her beauty but her intelligence. They could relate on an intellectual plot, but the attraction was so tempting, even though he was ruthless the way he made her his in his commanding ways, it was all worth it in the end. There were times you felt he had been rather heartless in the process of capturing her heart, and felt rather awkward when he was caught at his manulations, but he felt no shame at his cunning behavior, to Harry, Poppy was worth fighting for. You like the way he likes her and you could know as his background started to unfold.
I would highly reccomend this book, as well as the entire series.
If you thought the Hathaway series got off to a slow start I can assure you it is full steam ahead now. As far as I’m concerned this is the best of the series by far. Tempt Me At Twilight is one of the most romantic romances I have read in a very long time. Poppy Hathaway is up to bat in this one and she already has her heart set on the Honorable Michael Bayning. They have courted all season long and Poppy is just waiting for him to pop the question so she can live happily ever after.
Enter wealthy hotel owner Harry Rutledge. He owns the hotel where her family spends the season in London. If you follow this series you will remember Beatrice of the many animal menagerie? Her ferret, Dodger, is loose in the hotel and Poppy must catch him before a like letter he has stolen causes a scandal. This clever opening to the tale will have you laughing out loud as Harry and Poppy certainly “meet cute.” Beatrice approves Harry immediately when she finds out he has been ferret approved. She is even more impressed when she finds out Dodger chewed a hole in his chair and Harry didn’t even blink. The rest of the family is not so easily impressed.
In fact the entire family wants to murder him when they find out just how far he’ll go in order to have Poppy for his wife. Believe me, he is a very terrible boy. Oh, but to have a man like you like he likes Poppy? Yes, ladies, we would all give a favorite body part for a tasty man like Harry Rutledge. This is some of the best writing I have seen from Lisa Kleypas ever. It is truly a romance where we aren’t just told that A likes B, we SEE it. In living color we see and hear the hero lose his heart to Poppy. I fell in like with Poppy too. She really shines in this tale and is perfect for Harry in every way.
I could go on and on about how well written this book is but don’t take my word for it. You will certainly want this one on your keeper shelf so run out and get it right now so you can spend as many pleasant hours as I did. That is my only complaint about this book. It wasn’t nearly long enough. Oh, and Leo is up next. This book gives us a few teasers and it looks to be another wonderful tale. Unfortunately we have to wait until Summer 2010 for Leo’s tale. But if it is even half as excellent as this one I’ll be satisfied. Well done, Ms. Kleypas. Very well done.
what a fantastic tale–i was up until midnight reading it. probably one of the best i’ve read this year (and i read about 20 books a month!) I am really looking forward to leo and bea’s tales next year! write quicker lisa!
First off, I will say that I like nearly every single book that Lisa Kleypas has written. She is my favorite author, and I wait for her new books to come out like a kid waiting for Christmas. Ms. Kleypas has developed into such a WONDERFUL writer, and each book (both historical and modern,) keeps getting better. Lisa Kleypas, if you ever read this review, I want you to know I reckon you are the greatest romance novelist of all time.
As for this tale, it was awesome. Kleypas writes her men just how I like them, huge and alpha, but really in like with their leading ladies. Harry, a ruthless hotel owner, is in complete control of everyone and everything around him. When he meets Poppy, the third in the line of Hathaways, he is smitten with her intelligence and charm and decides he’ll marry her by any means necessary. Harry does some nefarious things to get to his goal, but he never does anything I couldn’t forgive him for. The coversations between Poppy and Harry are witty and flirty, and as always Kleypas’ characters are so engrossing that you really care about them. The other Hathaways play vital roles in the tale, which makes all us series fans pleased to read (but Poppy’s small childhood problem of being a klepto is never brought up.) Poppy is a young lady shaped by a family who likes her, and her gentle, understanding influence on Harry helps him to have a healthy relationship with her and those he cares about. As I’ve already stated, my favorite part about any Kleypas tale is how much the heroes like their heroines. This writer has a talent for humor, realistic dialogue, and passionate like scenes. Unlike many romance novels, the relationship and feelings develop before the sex scenes, and it makes the like seem more real.
Ms. Kleypas you are the queen. Everyone who reads romance novels should read this book and every single book that Lisa Kleypas has written.
May all hardened, loveless heroes (“I’ve never wanted to be loved. And God knows no one’s done it yet”) have an unconventional family like the Hathaways routing for them! The Hathaways are terrific to read. Amelia’s suggestion “Sometimes when you are making the best of a situation. it turns out far better than you could have hoped”, seems to sum up the family approach to life. Poppy’s responses to what life had thrown her changed the whole tempo of this romance into a tale you I couldn’t help but smile at the end.
I like Lisa Kleypas’s books. But the 1st Hathaway was excellent but not spectacular and I’ll admit I skipped the 2nd because the synopsis didn’t grab me. But I loved the concept of the 3rd book.
Harry Rutledge is a fantastic alpha male, he’s rich, intelligent, slightly emotionally impaired. Meets up with Poppy Hathaway who is young native, and a breath of fresh air in his life. Its not a new formula or even surprising in plot, but the writing is brilliant and there’s no hemming or hawing going on. Harry, meets her for in the first few pages and decides then and there that she’s his. Of course marriage might not be in his mind but you get the thought. He’s ruthless in getting what he wants but it works and you can justify his actions.
This is Lisa at her best. I only wish she would write more historicals.
I loved this book and just spent the whole of my day off reading it when I had a million other things to do. I really have not much loved the first two books in this series but with this one I reckon Lisa Kleypas is right back on top form. Harry Rutledge is a gorgeous hero. Apparently ruthless and determined to get his own way but with such a hurt past which becomes clearer as you read that he is also desperately vulnerable – for me a fatal combination. Poppy is also charming and she is just perfect for him – her and her family are just what he needs. I like a romance where the couple get married early on and you see them forced into intimacy, getting to know each other and falling in like and that is what you get with this book. I loved the Hathaway family much more in this book than in the others and their part in the tale was well done and didn’t feel in any way gratuitous. I can’t wait for Leo’s tale now. He became much more fascinating during this book as well when previously I had thought him rather weak and spoilt. The romance in this book is slightly darker and less straightforward than in the previous two Hathaway books but it makes for more emotional intensity and drama and a more satisfactory outcome. Loved it.
This was one of my favorite Kleypas tales to date (which is saying alot because I like ALL her books!). But this is really such a excellent book. Harry was so cruel in the beginning, but I thought he was so sweet because of how much he loved and wanted Poppy. Poppy came off as one of those heroines that you HOPE would be featured in every novel! She’s very intelligent and articulate, yet strong and not naive (thank god! I can’t stand excessively naive heroines.) But, my one problem with her is that she was too cold to Harry at the beginning of their marriage. That’s understandable, of course, after what he did to her, but I still wish that she could have forgiven him quicker. Still, fantastic novel, fantastic author!
Highly recommended! I CANNOT WAIT until Married by Morning (yikes! 4 more days!!)
Lisa Kleypas is one of my favorite romance writers for a very excellent reason-she consistently writes fantastic and heart felt romances. I reckon this is one of her better works and certainly one of the best romance novels I have read in the past few years
What made this tale work for me was the hero, Harry. He was mysterious, magnetic, passionate, driven and, more than anything, determined to have the heroine Poppy despite any and all obstacles, including the fact that she was in like with another man.
What I liked best about Harry was that he seemed to genuinely like Poppy as a person. A lot of romance novels place too much emphasis on sex. I liked that it was not a like at first sight set-up(I mean, how hard is it for a man to reckon he likes a gorgeous woman?). Harry had seen Poppy before, but did not become interested in her until he was exposed to her right personality. I thought the writer and the hero handled the wedding day and night wonderfully and with authenticity.
A reviewer mentioned that the writer never clarified why Poppy and Harry loved one another. I reckon that it was a excellent choice by the writer. She did not try to clarify the mystery that is like or how or why polar opposites meet and recognize that they complete each other. She showed us.
I admit that I thought the first two Hathaway books were not in the same league as Kleypas’ wonderful Wallflower series. I just did not get into all of the history of the Romany Gypsies which went along with Cam and Amelia’s tale and Kev Merripen and Win’s tale. But this new Hathaway tale, which pairs silent sister Poppy with the deliciously sexy and callous hotel owner, Harry Rutledge, sees Kleypas back in top form, and has me looking forward to the next books in the series.
Gorgeous Poppy, arguably the most “normal” of the eccentric Hathaway clan, is in like with a viscount’s son, Michael Bayning. She sees the conventional Michael as her ticket to a “silent, ordinary life.” But the stumbling block is Michael’s aristocratic father who may not see Poppy as excellent enough for his son. Chasing a runaway ferret (Beatrix’s pet, Dodger) through the halls of the magnificent Rutledge Hotel because the critter has stolen a secret like letter from Michael, Poppy stumbles upon a hidden passageway in the hotel which flings her straight into the arms of handsome Harry Rutledge, a rich, mysterious American. The unfolding tale of how Poppy and Harry ultimately marry, and how Harry learns what it is to like, is classic, page-turning Kleypas. Harry isn’t quite as devilish as Viscount Sebastian St. Vincent The Devil in Winter (The Wallflowers, Book 3), but he’s close. And Kleypas fans will savor every dastardly impulse Harry has to lure Poppy into marriage, read the steamy sex scenes with delight, and then like the gradual turning of the tables.
It looks as though Kleypas fans can look forward to at least two more Hathaway books. Obviously there is something going on between Leo Hathaway and Poppy’s companion, Catherine Marks. And then Beatrix has to have her tale, as well. I’m predicting that Jake Valentine is being groomed for the wild, animal-loving Beatrix. I can’t wait.
